Calling out the government without fear of punishment – it’s one of the most important things Americans can do with their right to free speech.
But late last year, Emerson College’s Conduct Board disagreed.
They suspended a student organization for handing out stickers that read “China Kinda Sus,” a slang term for acting suspiciously. Emerson stated the students’ criticism of the Chinese government’s brutality and human rights violations contributed to a “pervasive environment of anti-Asian discrimination”—despite the fact that members of the group were Asian themselves.
America’s colleges claim to provide environments that foster student expression. But if Emerson is any indicator, that right to free expression is under threat.
