Efforts to shut down free speech never go away entirely — they just change over time.
This time, censorship is rearing its head in our libraries. Politicians want to control what we can and can’t read by banning books they don’t like. Some have even called for book burnings. All because they care more about shutting down challenging or different ideas instead of addressing them head-on.
This is not what America is about. A free society can’t be truly free if it has to silence competing ideas instead of engaging with them. Freedom of speech allows us to experience new perspectives so we can learn and grow. And what begins with banning books will only end with restricting speech and regulating opinions.
The answer to books we dislike isn’t banning or burning. It’s reading and discussion.
